Every single person on the planet, whether they know it or not, wants to achieve their version of success. Period.

That’s why we fascinate over sports stars, actors and successful businessman. We want what they have. We want to experience the fame, the money and the freedom that comes from being successful. But, most importantly, we want to know how to get it.

If everyone wants success, how come so few of us are successful? In this article I am going to explore both the definition of success and how you, the average man (or woman), can get it.

So to begin, let me share with you my definition for success:

Success means learning, growing and evolving along the way to achieving a set of pre-determined goals or objectives.

Will Smith once stated, “Greatness (or success) is not this wonderful, esoteric, elusive, god-like feature that only the special among us will ever taste – you know it’s something that truly exists in all of us.” and I believe this to be true in every sense of the word. Although, in saying that, the first step in achieving true success isn’t to go after what other seemingly successful people have. You have to define what success means to you, and then work towards achieving it.

To assist you on your journey, here are my 5 Fundamentals For Defining and Creating Your Own Success

1. DISCOVER YOUR PASSION

The first step to take in defining and creating your own success is to find out what it is you love to do. What’s the one thing, or activity, that consumes most of your thought? That brings you happiness and fulfilment? That you can’t go a day without thinking about? Whatever this thing is, it’s not only your calling, but it is your passion. By discovering what it is you’re passionate about it will help you set goals that you will not only stick to, but will do anything to achieve.

2. SET GOALS IN LINE WITH YOUR PASSION

Once you have determined what it is you’re passionate about, set goals in line with that activity. If, for example, you love to dance, you may choose a target of dancing 5 times per week, for half an hour at a time. Check out this Bulletproof 5-Step Goal Setting Process to learn how to correctly set goals and to give yourself the best chance of achieving them.

3. LEARN TO PRIORITIZE

Now that you have developed an understanding of what it is that you’re passionate about, and what you want to achieve (your goals), you need to ensure that they become your number one priority. Sure, it’s important to have fun and find balance in your life, but if you want to be successful then you have to prioritize the activities that will bring you success. If your number one goal is to start your own business in five years and you’re going our drinking three nights during the week, then you need to seriously consider how bad you want success.

4. LEARN TO LOVE THE PROCESS

“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” – Zig Ziglar

To create and achieve your own version of success, you not only need to achieve the goals you’ve set, but you need to learn, grow and evolve in the process. Achieving your goal should be secondary to the person you become. Learn to love the process, enjoy the journey and have fun failing and learning lessons along the way. The achievement of your goal is simply a bonus to the character you create along the way.

5. DON’T COMPARE YOUR SUCCESS TO OTHERS

The most important aspect of defining and creating your own success is that it is specific to you. Don’t compare yourself to others. The thing that brings you happiness and fulfilment may be plain and boring to another person, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Have the courage to stand by your version of success with confidence and conviction.

Although there may be other factors and principles that come in to play when chasing your own success, I believe these 5 fundamentals to be the most most important. You will will never achieve success without passion, planning, confidence, conviction and a love for learning, and the fundamentals above embody these factors.
